Our patients are starting to reap the rewards of our table-top gardening sessions. Michael is enjoying the monthly group and is delighted with the results – his sweet peas are ready to flower and mint is ready to use!
The group – run by our Specialist Occupational Therapist Sinead and green-fingered volunteers Sally and Jane – join on Zoom from their home for the hour-long activity, which provides a great way to help patients connect with nature and is good for mental wellbeing.
Michael said: “It’s a lovely idea. A box with everything needed is delivered the day before along with tea and biscuits! Having grown up surrounded by plants, flowers and trees, I’ve never planted a thing, so it’s been good to create and nurture something from scratch.
“It’s been very good for my hands and the twisting and turning is good exercise for my arms. We plant things from seed and I’ve had good success, with the first sweet peas already planted out in my garden and flowering.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying the activity. It’s an hour spent doing something very different for me and I’m seeing something grow from nothing. Sinead and the volunteers put their heart and soul into the activity.”
