Volunteers’ table-top gardening club helps patients enjoy nature

June 4, 2021

Our new table-top gardening sessions are proving extremely popular with patients and a wonderful way to help people continue enjoying nature – all thanks to our green fingered volunteers!

North London Hospice’s Health & Wellbeing Centre volunteers Jane and Sally pack boxes of gardening goodies each month containing everything needed for the activity and deliver them to patients the day before the online sessions.  The group sowed sweet pea seeds during their latest gathering. Each activity is designed to be carried out seated at a table or sat in bed to make it accessible to many patients, including those facing challenges with mobility.

“Gardening activities are good for both physical and mental wellbeing and our patients are really enjoying spending time creating something independently to feel proud of, watch grow and enjoy with family or friends,” says our Specialist Occupational Therapist Sinead Stack.

“The sessions are possible thanks to our volunteers who plan the activity, acquire the materials, pack and deliver them to patients and then lead the workshops on Zoom.”
