North London Hospice’s new Inpatient Unit gets funding boost
North London Hospice is one step closer to building a new Inpatient Unit thanks to a £500,000 fundraising boost from Peabody. The not-for profit housing association has converted a loan that was given to the hospice nearly 40 years ago into a grant, releasing essential funding for the project.
The original loan was used in 1987 to help buy land in Finchley for an 18-bed hospice for people with life-limiting illnesses in North London. Peabody’s architects helped design the original building. The hospice needs to raise over £10m to fund the new facility, which is being designed specifically to meet the needs of modern-day palliative and end-of-life care.
“We’re building for tomorrow,” said Anna Cooper, the hospice’s Director of Fundraising and Communications. “We’ve been supporting our community for more than 40 years and want to make sure we can continue providing the care that patients and their families need for another 40 years and beyond.”
The new centre will have larger rooms with sofa beds so family can stay overnight with their loved ones, and each room will have bathrooms with adapted facilities. The hospice has raised over two thirds of the money needed to build the unit and is now looking at ways of raising the final funds so work can start in August. It’s due to be ready in July 2027.
Phil Day, Peabody’s Chief Financial Officer, said: “We’re very pleased to be able to support the valuable work of North London Hospice and help them with their plans for a new building. Working in partnership to help support local communities, and particularly vulnerable people living in those neighbourhoods, is a big part of what Peabody has always been about, and it’s something we’re keen to continue.”
The hospice receives referrals for more than 3,500 patients every year. Last year, 315 people were admitted to our Inpatient Unit. Hospice staff made more than 21,000 visits to patients in their own homes and more than 1,300 people attended its outpatient and wellbeing clinics.
Separately, Peabody provides care and support services to around 25,000 customers across 26 different local authorities. This includes young people’s services in Lambeth, support for people dependent on drugs and alcohol in Essex, and a rough sleeper initiative in Essex.
