    Kitty's Open Garden - Totteridge

    Sunday 28 June 2-6pm

Entry £5 per adult. Under 16s go free.

When Kitty and Daniel purchased their house in 2011, the garden was derelict. It was overgrown, full of weeds and ivy and had a broken glasshouse.  Daniel set about clearing the site with a mini digger.

Several years earlier they had enrolled in a one day a week course over two years at Capel Manor College.  They both did the RHS general horticulture course and in the second year, Daniel studied landscaping and Kitty studied plants and planting design.

Daniel designed the layout of the new garden which was tricky as the land was on different levels.  He then found a garden contractor to create his vision. They divided the site into sections to include various paths, pergolas and beds for sun and shade and ericaceous woodland with autumn colour.

One feature Daniel was keen on was to make the garden accessible to a wheelchair.

Kitty designed the beds using a lot of plants that she had propagated from the house and garden they had lived in previously.

Initially the plants were tiny but Kitty had learned the origin of the plants, their requirements to thrive, which plants worked well together and what their eventual height and spread would be so she knew how things would look as they matured. She had to bear in mind structure, texture, colour and staggered bloom times for the garden to look lovely all year round.

Sadly, Daniel died five years ago.  His birthday was on 28th June so Kitty has chosen this date to open her garden in memory of Daniel who was instrumental in taking the initiative with creating the garden.

Daniel was also co-founder with Kitty of the charity Nip in the Bud – Learning about children’s mental health and neurodivergence through film.

The garden will be open in support of the North London Hospice and Nip in the Bud https://nipinthebud.org
