Congratulations to Jodie Wheeler, Learning and Development Business Partner at North London Hospice, who has just passed her degree – with first class honours!

Jodie, who joined the hospice in 2016, is the first person to undertake a full degree through the hospice’s apprenticeship scheme. Studying for a BA Hons in Management with Anglia Ruskin University, she started her degree in January 2020.

    Supporting work-life balance

ā€œI didn’t want to study just any degree and the option with Anglia Ruskin caught my attention because there were several modules related to the third sector. It was also a flexible course which fitted around my life which of course included my work at the hospice,ā€ said Jodie.

Jodie first became aware of degree apprenticeships through her work with the Learning and Development team at the hospice.

Jodie follows in the footsteps of five healthcare assistants who undertook a foundation degree at Middlesex University, graduating as Nursing Associates in July 2022. North London Hospice is eligible for the scheme as it pays the Apprenticeship Levy. Jodie explains: ā€œA lot of people don’t realise that the opportunity is for non-clinicians too and having gone through the process, I feel I can advise people on what to expect.ā€

Nicola Miller, Social Work Assistant at North London Hospice started her degree apprenticeship in Social Work at the University of Kent earlier this month and was one of the people who Jodie advised. Nicola said: ā€œI am excited to begin my studies and be able to expand my knowledge and use it in different ways. I am also feeling a little apprehensive thinking about how I will juggle studies with work and family life too, which is where Jodie’s experiences and advice have been so useful. I am hugely grateful to North London Hospice for this opportunity.ā€

Degree apprenticeships – combining work and study

Degree apprenticeships are not only a fantastic opportunity for the individuals but also for the organisations involved. Jodie explains: ā€œIt has informed my work in the hospice, given me tools in terms of project management, strategic management, and understandings of sustainability, not just when it comes to the environment, but also the ability to evaluate whether a business is viable or not.

ā€œYou’re never too old to do something new and whilst it might seem daunting when you start, there’s a great sense of achievement. 20 per cent of your time is protected for study each week so it’s also a fantastic opportunity to learn whilst working. It can open doors and helps having the theory to back up what you’re saying. We all contribute, and whilst I am the only non-clinician in my team, we all view different disciplines and backgrounds as an asset.ā€

Kate Phillips, Head of Learning and Development at North London Hospice said: ā€œCongratulations to Jodie on completing her degree apprenticeship, we are delighted for her. Jodie completed her degree in addition to working full time here at the hospice, as well as supporting her two children, husband, and a dog! It’s been such a pleasure watching her develop and implement her learning into her daily work, we are so proud of her.ā€

Jodie added: ā€œI couldn’t have done it without Kate and my team here at the hospice who have been so supportive. More people should take up the opportunity to do a degree apprenticeship – I recommend it.ā€

    Let's keep in touch.
