Our statement following the release of government funding for hospices
As hospices across England receive their much-anticipated cash injection from the government, North London Hospice is pleased to confirm that we have been allocated ÂŁ849,842 this financial year from the Department for Health and Social Care.
It was in December last year that an announcement was made by Wes Streeting, the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to allocate an initial ÂŁ25million from government funds in what has been described as the biggest investment in a generation for hospices. This is part of a wider ÂŁ100million funding package for the sector.
Declan Carroll, Chief Executive of North London Hospice said: “We welcome the government’s support at a time when our sector is facing significant challenges. Whilst this funding provides some relief, it is a one-off grant which can only be spent on capital projects.
“This funding for building works and maintenance is needed, but we cannot spend the money on the running of our patient services, at a time when our costs have increased dramatically.
“We will continue to work constructively with the government, and our wider group of stakeholders, including Hospice UK, to campaign for sustainable funding for our sector.
“We need the government to step up and provide a secure funding framework and support for hospices like ours, so that we can continue our business-as-usual work and achieve our vision of providing the best of life, at the end of life, for everyone.”
