Jack’s Story

“Grandpa Jeff was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in November 2021. In April 2022 his symptoms became unmanageable at home, and he was transferred to North London Hospice. He was terrified of being admitted to the hospice – (but) he felt at ease almost immediately and would tell everyone how fantastic the staff were and how well he was being looked after.”

“A volunteer called Joe took him to the park almost every day and Grandpa loved that. They would chat and drink lattes and he loved seeing the dogs in the park. He really felt like he had made a new friend and looked forward to his visits.”

“Grandpa was discharged from the Hospice in June 2022 and went on to spend nearly 5 months quite comfortably back at home. Sadly, at the end of October he was re-admitted. This time he was not afraid. The staff treated him with such respect and dignity right to the very end.”

“In preparation for my Bar Mitzvah I was asked to complete a project for charity. I could not think of anything I wanted to do more than raise money for the North London Hospice and when my mum told me about the Big Fun Walk, I jumped at the chance to participate! We had such a great day! It was good fun, we saw some great views and there was a lovely community feel. I raised £1069 and felt really proud when I crossed the finish line! I am sure I will take part again in future years. The hospice is a very special place and my family and I are very grateful for all their hard work and support in the most difficult of times.”

Supporter Jack shared with us why him and his mum Jo took part in our Big Fun Walk last year. If you feel inspired by Jack, join us on Sunday 2 June for our Big Fun Walk 2024. Invite your friends, family, neighbours, and colleagues and help us to continue to provide our care, so nobody in our North London community ever needs to face terminal illness alone.
