Why Volunteer at North London Hospice

Why volunteer at North London Hospice?

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at North London Hospice. Volunteers are an essential part of the hospice team – we couldn’t do all we do without you!

Volunteers help to ensure our patients, and those who love and care for them, are supported, that our shops offer a high-quality and friendly service, and that our fundraising events are a success.

Our vision is the best of life, at the end of life, for everyone. We welcome the skills, generosity, compassion, and dedication our volunteers provide to help us achieve this. If you’d like to be part of this mission, we’d love you to join the team!

Hundreds of volunteers, thousands of reasons why

Volunteers have many reasons for wanting to get involved.  We offer a variety of roles to help meet people’s differing motivations, both service-user facing and behind the scenes at the hospice. We also offer the opportunity to gain retail experience in one of our local charity shops.

We know it’s important that volunteering fits smoothly into your life, so there are roles to fit your availability – both one-off opportunities and others involving regular shifts. We hope you’ll find something that’s right for you, however much time you can give.

But as well as giving, what will you gain from volunteering with us? When you’re donating your time, skill, and experience, it’s important you get something back too. Perhaps you want to:

  • Gain new skills – volunteering can be a fantastic way to learn and develop practical and personal skills.  We provide training for all our volunteers and ensure you have the resources and support you need.
  • Utilise existing skills – everyone has something to offer, whether that’s gained through employment, personal experience or volunteering elsewhere. We benefit so much from the skills volunteers bring and are always enormously grateful.
  • Build your network – volunteering is an opportunity to build new friendships, helping keep loneliness at bay. Maybe you’ve recently moved into the area, you want to meet new people with similar values, or you want to improve your confidence. Volunteering helps to bring people together.
  • Get involved in your community – whether you’ve lived in the area for many years or have just moved in, there’s no better way to engage with and support your community than to volunteer in it.
  • Enhance your health and wellbeing – keeping active, mentally as well as physically, has a powerful influence over our health and wellbeing. When we asked, 97% of service-user facing volunteers who replied said volunteering for North London Hospice contributes positively to their health and wellbeing.
  • Simply give something back – maybe you’ve previously benefited from volunteering services, or you’ve had first-hand experience of the support the hospice can offer. Perhaps you just feel you’ve been fortunate, and you’d like to share that with others. Volunteering gives you the opportunity to give something back.

You will have your own reasons and motivations for volunteering. There’s no right or wrong approach, it’s all about finding something that’s right for you. The most important thing about volunteering is it fits easily into your life, you enjoy it and it’s a rewarding experience for you, as well as for the people you help.

Both individually and collectively, volunteers make a huge difference to our work providing palliative care and support, when and where people need us most.

Hospice care is not only about helping people to die peacefully but also enabling people to make the best of their life despite their illness. We are always extremely grateful for everything you do to help. Thank you.

We hope you’ll find a role that appeals and to hear from you soon.
